My New Obsession!

Wed Nov 18, 2009, 12:31 AM
Alas, I have another new obsession! (Besides my fiance Dana who is my eternal obsession lol) I have begun an interest in sea (or beach) glass creations! I've started with necklaces but my mind is reeling with all the things I want to make with the beach glass. Now, whether or not I'll actually be able to make these things (lack of space or equipment) is another issue but I'll do what I can with what I've got!
Thanks to my mother and her godmother for getting me hooked on another hobby that will steer me even further away from my other hobbies as if life in itself wasn't enough lol :) Good things my Dana understands my obsessions and even gets in some ideas of his own once in a while :)

The greatest thing about sea glass is the hunt. It's so much fun combing the beaches for hours looking for your next rare find (some colors are very rare), the next piece for your jewelry collections or just an addition to the other things you create with them.
There's also the history and mysterious origins of where they came from. Is it from the people that used to live around that beach throwing their broken pottery and glass out into the ocean? (Wow you'd be surprised at how much they all used to litter regularly) Or maybe it comes from a sunken ship that went down miles and miles away from where you are.
The really nice pieces that are worn, frosted and smooth are shards of glass or china that have been rolling around in the sea for decades and then come to rest at your feet.

Hunting for sea glass the way my family and I do, is nothing but good for everyone. We get the old glass we want, plus we clean the beaches of any other glass we find along the way so we're picking up garbage and saving some little feet from being cut on the sharp pieces.
It's pretty good exercise too lol. Not to mention all the crafts and jewelry you can make for your friends and family or for sale.
So you see, it's a win win win for all!

Happy hunting to all of you who do go looking for sea glass!
I've got to make my way to another ocean coastline soon or I'll go crazy! lol :)

I saw a documentary, some time ago, about how valuable sea glass jewelry can be. Especially the red sea glass. Keep up the good work.

Thanks :) Ya I guess it's like anything else really, it's all worth what someone is willing to pay for it lol :)For some it's just old junk but I love the history behind it's origins and some people make strikingly beautiful jewelry with it so I would be someone who would buy it lol
